This infographic served as my first project for the Introduction to Data Visualization and Infographics course by Alberto Cairo at the University of Miami. Students were asked to either create an infographic about mangroves or energy dependence; I chose mangroves.

Topic Selection

I chose to make an infographic focusing on mangroves, but I wanted to focus on a specific aspect of mangroves. I decided to focus on mangroves’ role as fish nurseries, and after becoming more familiar with the topic, I further honed in on how mangroves’ fish supply can serve as a means of achieving self-sustaining communities of people.

Research

In conducting my research and writing my project proposal, I was focused on finding answers to the following questions:

  1. How do mangroves support fish?
  2. How much fish can people catch from mangroves?

In answering these questions, I realized that mangroves fish supply can provide food security for the people who live near them, which made me ask:

Can the food security provided by mangroves’ fish supply serve as a means of achieving self-sustaining communities of people?

It turned out that they can.

After conducting research, it was time to create a sketch of the infographic:
